Interference (intro)

I crawled around in abandoned buildings for three years working on this series- from frisco to Milan, wherever I could find them and by any means that I could get in. I'm grateful to those who gave me tips on these junkyards; it's amazing how many people have a place like these filed away in their memories and hometowns. I've always loved these forgotten spaces, but this series focuses more on the objects you find in them- by virtue of their disuse, they become functionless form (usually they're so broken and dirty that they wouldn't work if you tried to use them), which is interesting to me, because they're still familiar objects.
To make these collages I would find a bunch of stuff that I thought would look good together and arranged it in a part of the space I liked, then photograph it from a few angles, usually three frontal angles within a 120 degree linear horizontal arc. I'd then make multiple 11 x 14 prints from each of the three 4x5 negatives, and collage these prints together, resulting in a fragmented and slightly warped version of the subject. Most of these images are at least 4' on the diagonal, all on metallic paper. They're a lot more impressive in person. I called this series Interference- humans make building, some other humans synthesize and shape some raw materials to make useful objects, people occupying the building buy some of these things, use them for years, their company fails (or whatever), leave the building and all the junk behind, stuff starts to decay and get worn down by the elements, kids graffiti all over the building and hang out there and leave their garbage everywhere, then I would come in, move it all around, shoot it, print it, collage it, shoot the collage digitally, and now I put it up here.
